What detective show was Don Johnson in?
The detective show was Miami Vice, where Johnson played Detective James “Sonny” Crockett and won a Golden Globe (TV Insider). Miami Vice ran from 1984 to 1989 for his starring stretch and totaled 110 episodes.
What other TV shows and movies has he starred in?
- During the Miami Vice years, he also starred in The Long Hot Summer (1985) and Sweet Hearts Dance (1988), according to a production biography (Detroit Press bio).
- His later filmography includes Nash Bridges, Django Unchained, and Knives Out (IMDb).
How did Miami Vice impact his career?
Without Sonny Crockett, Don Johnson would be a working character actor with a nice resume. With Crockett, he is a TV icon who can still headline a network drama at 75.
The role made him a pop-culture fixture: stubble, pastel blazers, and sports coats became shorthand for 1980s cool.
The implication: Miami Vice isn’t a past role; it is the reference point that colors every part Johnson takes now.
Who is Dakota Johnson?
Dakota Johnson is Don Johnson’s daughter with Melanie Griffith, and her October 4, 1989 birth date is documented by E! News (E! Online). She is an actress best known for the Fifty Shades film series.
Who is Don Johnson as a father?
- Don has said Dakota is a better actress than he is and better than her mother, Melanie Griffith (People).
- He has also confirmed meeting her boyfriend, Coldplay’s Chris Martin (People).
Does Dakota Johnson still have a relationship with Antonio Banderas?
- Antonio Banderas was her stepfather during his marriage to Melanie Griffith; public reporting in the reviewed sources does not document the current state of that relationship.
What this means: Don Johnson’s public image as a father is unusually warm, which is why daughter-related questions keep surfacing in searches.
Who was the love of Don Johnson’s life?
Public records do not give one tidy answer. Johnson married Melanie Griffith twice — first in 1976, then again from 1989 to 1996 — and People’s family profile treats that bond as central to his life story (People).
Who was Don Johnson married to?
- Melanie Griffith: married in 1976, annulled that year, then married again 1989–1996 (People).
- Patti D’Arbanville is also part of his family history as the mother of his son Jesse, according to the same family profile (People).
Was Melanie Griffith the love of his life?
The repeated marriage is the data point: for better or worse, Griffith is the person Johnson kept choosing, even when the first attempt collapsed.
The catch: “Love of his life” is a narrative choice, not a documented status — which explains why multiple names keep appearing in fan discussions.
What is Don Johnson doing today?
Don Johnson is still acting. He appears as Captain Robert Massey in Doctor Odyssey, which premiered on ABC and Hulu on September 26, 2024 (Wikiwand).

According to Wikiwand, the show’s one-season run ended by default when the cast options expired on June 27, 2025 (Wikiwand).
The pattern: Johnson’s career now moves in decade-long arcs — Miami Vice in the 1980s, Nash Bridges in the 1990s, Doctor Odyssey in the 2020s — and the next arc depends on which network places the bet.
Is Don Johnson a nice guy in real life?
There is no objective scoreboard for “nice guy.” What the public record shows is a performer who has been open about his past, supportive of his daughter’s career, and comfortable letting his work lead the conversation.
What do co-stars say about Don Johnson?
- The reviewed sources don’t include a full transcript of every co-star comment, but the recurring picture from his Miami Vice era and later sets is professionalism.
The trade-off: a long career in Hollywood tends to polish a public image. Whether that matches what happens behind closed doors is exactly what remains unclear.

The takeaway
Don Johnson has already done what most actors only dream of: he made a character so iconic that his name still conjures Miami Vice, then outlasted the trend cycles that ended so many 1980s careers. The forward stake is his next contract. For premium cable and streaming networks, the move is clear: give him a role that uses his age, not one that fights it — or another platform will.
